Special Features
About : Retreat House,St. Peter

If you have ever dreamed of living in a home that was designed and built in Bali but you would prefer it was tucked away on the edge of a natural tropical gully in Barbados, then this is the perfect property for you. Sitting at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, just minutes by car from Port St. Charles and the new Port Ferdinand Marina on the west coast, this superbly built Indonesian escape is so private, even the local monkeys have trouble finding it.

Maynards is a relatively new residential development on the northern boundary of St. Peter. The neighbourhoods of the development sit to the south of the main road that links “Mile and a Quarter” to the west coast. It is home to the “Sugar Cane Club and Spa” along with a collection of residential homes in various shapes and sizes.

Solid antique hardwood beams, custom designed and hand carved teak doors, hardwood floors and sandstone clad walls are just some of the features that give this property its purposeful, deliberate and distinctive Indonesian character. Large, rustic, antique wooden uprights, sourced from an old sugar factory, greet you at the entrance. Hand carved teak, custom-designed main doors open to a wrap-around foyer balcony where wooden floors and sandstone clad walls give a sense of modern antiquity where intricately carved fret work blends with clean lines to create a space that is full of character. A wooden staircase leads from the main entrance down to the living areas below where red marble tiles in the living and dining areas open onto a large covered patio paved in antique ballast bricks that would have crossed the Atlantic from the UK in the 1800’s.

The bathrooms are clad in either sandstone or red marble with Onyx layered on to the marble tiled floors. High vaulted and vented ceilings with exposed tongue and grove boarding give a feeling of space while allowing cool gully breezes to flow through the house. Ornate Victorian railings serve as decorative security for the window allotments.
